The course provides participants with the knowledge necessary to: Be prepared for the next API 653 Authorized Aboveground Storage Tank Inspector certification exam and have enough knowledge and skills to pass in order to receive the API 653 Authorized Aboveground Storage Tank Inspector certificate. Effectively use major codes: API 650 and ASME B&PV Sections V & IX. Perform all basic tanks calculations needed for the API exam (e.g. tmin, MRT, max settlement, MDMT, corrosion rates, remaining life, etc.) Use API’s requirements during inspection, repairs, and alterations of tanks. Review welding procedures (WPS/PQR) and welder performance qualifications (WPQ).
Objectives:
Understand API 653 Scope and Purpose: Gain insight into the scope and purpose of API 653 and its applicability to various types of ASTs used in industries such as oil and gas, petrochemicals, and chemical manufacturing.
Learn Inspection Techniques: Familiarize with the inspection requirements and techniques outlined in API 653, including visual inspection, ultrasonic testing (UT), radiographic testing (RT), magnetic particle testing (MT), and liquid penetrant testing (PT). Develop Corrosion Assessment Skills: Learn how to assess corrosion and other forms of degradation in ASTs, including evaluating corrosion rates, conducting thickness measurements, and determining the remaining life of the tank.
Understand Repair and Alteration Procedures: Gain knowledge of the repair and alteration procedures specified in API 653, including weld repairs, shell plate replacements, bottom repairs, and roof modifications.
Explore API 653 Compliance: Understand the regulatory requirements and industry standards governing the inspection, repair, alteration, and reconstruction of ASTs, and learn how to ensure compliance with API 653 standards.
Learn Risk-Based Inspection (RBI) Concepts: Familiarize with risk-based inspection principles and methodologies for prioritizing inspection activities based on the likelihood and consequences of failure.
Gain Knowledge of Tank Foundation Design: Understand the design considerations and requirements for tank foundations, including soil analysis, foundation types, and structural design criteria.
Learn Tank Relocation and Reconstruction Procedures: Gain insight into the procedures for relocating and reconstructing ASTs, including dismantling, transportation, and reassembly of tank components.
Understand Environmental and Safety Considerations: Learn about environmental protection measures, safety protocols, and regulatory requirements related to AST operations, maintenance, and decommissioning.
Enhance Problem-Solving Skills: Develop problem-solving skills through case studies, practical exercises, and interactive discussions to address common challenges and issues encountered in AST inspection and maintenance.
Course Outline:
Thickness measurements, Inspection Intervals and Integrity:
Code calculation questions will be oriented toward existing tank.
API Authorized tank Inspectors should be able to check and perform
calculations relative to in-service deterioration, repairs, rerates, or
alterations.
Welding Procedure and Qualification Evaluation Based On
API 650 and ASME Section IX:
The inspector should have the knowledge and skills required to review a Procedure Qualification Record and a Welding Procedure Specification and to be able to determine the following:
Determine if procedure and qualification records are in compliance with applicable ASME Code and any additional requirements of API- 653 The weld procedure review will include:
One Weld Procedure Specification (WPS);
and One Procedure Qualification Record (PQR).
NONDESTRUCTIVE EXAMINATION (ASME V, API 650, API 653):
Article 1, General Requirements
Article 2, Radiographic Examination
C. Article 6, Liquid Penetrant Examination, including Mandatory Appendices II and III
Article 7, Magnetic Particle Examination (Yoke and Prod techniques only)
Article 23, Ultrasonic Standards, Section SE–797 only
API 650 and API-653. General non-destructive examination requirements.
The inspector should be familiar with and understand the general rules for NDE (UG, UW, Appendices 4, 6, 8, and 12)
